Squaw

Jan 11 2008

After the holidays had finally ended and all of the tourists were heading home, the Tahoe locals got news of a massive storm scheduled to role through tahoe and dump up to ten feet of snow!! It was supposed to be the storm of the century. Devastating! Winds scheduled to be over 100+ miles an hour over the ridges!! I was sceptic however. the weather men always seem to jinx our storms by calling for obscene amounts of snow when we only receive a few inches!! Needless to say that I would believe it when I see it.. Well the weather men were half right this time at least. Storm totals after the week were around four or five feet. they were right about the wind however. Squaw esperienced 160 mile an hour winds blowing out windows, knocking over trees and derailing chair lifts!!
the storm started on thurs as rain. At 3 it finally started to snow and it was dumping!! i ended up getting snowed into Squaw. there was at least 2 feet of snow in the parking lot when I left at 9!!!
the next day was a really fun stormy powder day, my favorite cuz I get to ski for fun!! We skied for about 5 hours on KT and red Dog. Upper mountain was too windy of course. then the celebration at the Chamoix, beer and pizza and lots of stories of the days fun!!
Saturday was another epic day of stormy powder skiing. Only the lower mountain was open again, but with the fingers and lots of other fun terrain to choose from, it was another fun filled day. the snow kept on coming and the winds were raging.
Sunday was a bit nicer, less winds at least. Tower 16 opened at the end of the day. I had to stay longer even though my legs were fried!! More Apre led to another fun night of celebrating the storm!
The rest of the week was more of the same. Really really great skiing back to back to back. Skiing with friends and getting my ski legs back was very necessary for the upcoming season. I finally feel like the season has started and I'm very excited about this year, especially after all the new snow!! I look forward to the next storm of the century, even half of another storm!!
