Happy New Year
Jan 2 2008
Happy 2008!!! I spent the holidays at my house in Breckenridge this year. The weather was really cold and snowy with severe wind gusts up to 72mph!! The Colorado Department of Transportation actually closed I-70 and the Eisenhower Tunnel due to white out conditions and avalanche danger. I was lucky enough to make it to Breckenridge on Sunday, December 30th just before they closed the highway for almost 24 hours stranding over 2,000 people in Summit County. The Red Cross had to set up emergency shelters in Silverthorne's Rec Center and Elementary School where people had to sleep on gym mats like refugees.
Well, I was lucky enough to make it safely to my house on Baldy Mountain in Breckenridge. We accommodated some stranded friends, and hunkered down for the night. On New Year's Eve we woke up to single digit temperatures and near white out conditions. Instead of going to BreckenFRIDGE, we drove high up on Baldy Mountain and took powder runs down into my back yard. It was fresh! My roommates and their dog Shade lapped Baldy with us and got some first tracks in French Gulch. The best part was I even got to hit park! I was able to ski powder runs and drop into the backyard mini-jib park.
After a great day of backyard skiing, I-70 re-opened, and I headed to Silverthorne for a raucous New Years party. I celebrated with close friends and said farewell to 2007 and HELLO to 2008. ~ Steph Myers
